The Bay Challenge is a 10km point to point ocean race that takes place the end of July every year, and unbelievably, is in its 82nd year! Neither of us was feeling up to conquering the entire distance solo, so we set out to put a relay team of 3 together. Our original team consisted of myself, Tracy Anne and friend/colleague Sarah Jung (former competitive swimmer and current chiropractor extra-ordinnaire). However, Sarah went on vacation with her boyfriend Jeremy earlier in the year, and got engaged....so we let her off the hook to plan her wedding :) THIS YEAR. Thankfully our old masters swim pal Mauro was interested, and voila! The Shipping Lane Swimmers team was born.
After spending another long winter season swimming endless laps in the pool, we were counting down the days to the 1st weekend in May (as usual) to get back into the Ocean. It was like most first swims of the season. COLD and HARD. But we LOVED IT. Already there have been some pretty crazy swims with various wildlife encounters, cold temperatures, wacky currents and some pretty serious rough water....but we continue to suit up every week, knowing that we are learning some good lessons for race day. This week-end will be the first swim we all do together as a team, and I'm anticipating the energy to be high!
Stay tuned - it should be another interesting season!
